In 1811, British chemist Humphrey Davy was the first to produce chlorine dioxide (ClO2) by reaction of potassium chlorate and hydrochloric acid. After the discovery of ClO2 by Davy, it did not find widespread use as a disinfectant. However, in 1940, a commercial preparation of ClO2 using sodium hypochlorite led to the widespread use and application of ClO2 preparations. For example, in 1944, a factory in Niagara Falls (USA) used chlorine dioxide to purify drinking water.
It was quickly realized that ClO2 is inherently unstable at ambient temperatures and pressures, thus further limiting its widespread use. However, in the late 1970's, a method to stabilize chlorine dioxide was found; the product is referred to as Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide. New formulations and syntheses quickly found their way to the lab and to the marketplace. For example, the Chemical Acid Method (CAM) was discovered. In the CAM, ClO2 is cheaply produced by reaction of sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid. ClO2 produced using CAM has found applications in processing food, hospitals, and aquaculture. These applications demonstrate the sterilization and disinfection ability of ClO2.
On November 28, 2001, the U.S. EPA used chlorine dioxide in the Hart senate office in Capitol Hill for Anthrax spore decontamination. The following year on June 17, 2002, the U.S. EPA used chlorine dioxide in the Brentwood mail distribution center in Washington DC to combat a terrorist attack. The application for homeland security won the national attention of the decontamination and sterilization abilities of chlorine dioxide.
WHO has classified chlorine dioxide as level A1 chemical which is a new disinfectant after chlorine-based disinfectants.
The EPA has regulated that the drinking water should be sterilized by gaseous chlorine dioxide and the quantity of Trihalomethans should be less than 0.1 mg/L. In recent research, it was found that chlorine dioxide can remove organics in water and obtain efficient degradation in a hard to degrade herbicide.
Gaseous chlorine dioxide has become the best replacement of chlorine-based disinfectants.
So far, there are roughly 2000 water supply systems that utilize ClO2 produced by the Chemical Acid Method. The ClO2 produced by the CAM is used in water sterilization after gas-liquid separation.
However, the CAM method cannot be applied in many industries because of the high cost of gas-liquid separation and the high cost of the required equipment.
In recent years, increasing concerns about human health has led to an increase in the technology and frequency of testing products. It has been realized that there are toxic carcinogens such as trihalomethans and bromates present in drinking water after the water has been sterilized using stabilized chlorine dioxide produced by CAM.
The disadvantages of this method include the large quantity of chlorine, low productivity, and poor preservation. This method may pollute the environment with toxic carcinogens such as bromate, trihalomethans, sodium chlorite, and chlorine. Thus, this method may create more cost for future process and harm the health.
Since the cost of the equipment to generate ClO2 is very high and ClO2 is very hard to preserve, stabilized chlorine dioxide generated using CAM is currently preferred. However, harmful sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is highly toxic, difficult to dispose of, and is considered an important environmental pollutant.
In the past, the damage and disadvantages of chlorine dioxide was tolerated in order to embrace its advantages. Presently, Unique Biotechnology Co., Ltd combines 10 years of R&D and intellectual property which can replace the CAM of producing chlorine dioxide.
